Umbrella Flowers
Overview:
Umbrella flowers add a stunning cottage garden vibe to any garden or bouquet! Their blooms resemble an umbrella when in full bloom, and add a lacy disc element that is whimsical and magical. These flowers are easy to grow from seed, and can make a big impact in the garden. These plants can readily self seed, so be aware of that when planting.
Starting seeds:
Starting seeds is easy for umbrella flowers. Burry them about 1/4 deep and water them in. I always recommend direct seeding right into beds as umbrella flowers have longer tap roots that do not like to be disturbed.
If you have a bird or animal problem you can start them inside and transplant them into your beds. sow them 1/4” deep. Check out our seed starting guide for more tips and tricks.
Spacing:
6-9”
Sun:
Full sun, 6-8+ hours per day.
Water:
Water consistently throughout the growing season, plants have deep roots and can withstand slight drought conditions.
Fertilizer:
We typically liquid feed stock every two to three weeks during their growing season. They do not need a lot of fertilizer, but some keeps that pushing out blooms. Find our favorite fertilizer here.
Bloom Time:
Here in zone 9b we like to fall plant them in October and November for blooms in the Spring months. Orlaya is typically the first to bloom, Dara, then Amni.
